National Career Readiness Certificate

The National Career Readiness Certificate issued by ACT is a portable, evidence-based credential that measures essential workplace skills and is a reliable predictor of workplace success. This credential is used across all sectors of the economy and measures the following skills:     

  • Problem solvingACT_logo
  • Critical thinking
  • Reading and using written, work-related text
  • Applying information from workplace documents to solve problems
  • Applying mathematical reasoning to work-related problems
  • Setting up and performing work-related mathematical calculations
  • Locating, synthesizing, and applying information that is presented graphically
  • Comparing, summarizing, and analyzing information presented in multiple related graphics


The certification test was developed by ACT®  and consists of three components of the WorkKeys® assessment system: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information.  The complete assessment battery takes three to four hours to complete. This is the same test that all high school juniors in Michigan take as part of the Michigan Merit Exam.

The National Career Readiness Certificate offers proof that you posess the foundation skills essential for success in the workplace. The Certificate is designed to complement other traditional credentials, such as a high school diploma, community college degree, or college degree. While these education credentials mark the fulfillment of your classroom learning experiences, The Certificate proves you have the workplace skills needed to succeed at your new job. The Certificate offers individuals, employers, and educators an easily understood and nationally valued credential certifying essential workplace skills. While the National Career Readiness Certificate can be helpful for all job seekers, it is particularly useful for new entrants to the workforce, those changing careers, and those with barriers to employment.

Together with your other achievements and credentials, the National Career Readiness Certificate can help you make the critical first impression that places your application or resume at the top of the pile.


Levels of Certification

The National Career Readiness Certificate offers four levels of certification, based on your performance on the assessments:

The Platinum Certificate - Awarded for scores at level 6 or above on all three tests. Those awarded the Platinum Certificate posess the ability to learn 99% of the jobs in ACT's extensive database of occupational profiles.

The Gold Certificate - Awarded for scores at level 5 or above on all three tests. Those awarded the Gold Certificate posess the ability to learn 90% of the jobs in ACT's database.

The Silver Certificate - Awarded for scores at level 4 or above on all three tests. Those awarded the Silver Certificate posess the ability to learn 65% of the jobs in ACT's database.

The Bronze Certificate - Awarded for scores at level 3 or above on all three tests. Those awarded the Bronze Certificate posess the ability to learn 35% of the jobs in ACT's database.


How to Access Services

The National Career Readiness Certificate test is administered weekly in Livingston County. The Brighton Career Transition Center offers paper and  pencil tests twice per month. The Michigan Works! Livingston Service Center in Howell offers Internet based tests weekly. How to Prepare

Staff at the Michigan Works! Livingston Service Center have a variety of tools to help you prepare. Practice tests and other assessments can help you determine if you are ready for the tests. If you need additional help, consider using the KeyTrain™ training system to improve your skills. KeyTrain is a complete interactive Internet base training system designed specifically to enhance the career readiness skills tested by the National Career Readiness Certificate. KeyTrain sessions are offered once per week at the Michigan Works! Livingston Service Center in Howell. We can also help you set up your own KeyTrain account so you can access the program from any computer.
